TODAY, TOMORROWS AND YESTERDAYS

The third album contains a number of songs that have sat in the "too hard basket" for a number of years. And what evolved was a different production process. On the previous albums I tried to control all the parts of the process, and that often limited the artistic creativity of the musicians involved. On this album, I just handed over the basic song to the musicians who were playing the instruments, and allowed them to come up with what they felt the song needed. What was created, was something more than what my ideas could be. It's probably like the Steely Dan process. Get these great session guys in and get them to come up with stuff, and then take the best bits.

Some of the songs on this album, are what I consider to be great songs though, and a number of them are what I always sit down with the guitar , or at the piano, and play, when I am relaxing. And now they actually sound how I imagined they would.

01. Best It's Left Unsaid

It's one of those little conundrums you have when you get into a relationship. When do you reveal your feelings if you are worried that those feelings are not reciprocal. I was told by someone that they used to wake up at night, in a cold sweat, worrying about telling somebody they loved them, scared they would drive them away.

02. Not Looking Back

A friend of mine was going through one of those messy relationship break ups and was getting really stressed about the arguments over who got what. I asked him, if he thought it was really worth it, the only winners were the lawyers. Did he really need to keep all the constant reminders of the past.

03. I Can't Let Go

A question about dreams really. When do you give up on them? If the people you love aren't on board with your dream, or they are missing out on things that they want, then what do you achieve if your get what you are striving for and they are no longer there.

04. Please Be With Me

Pretty straight forward love song. It's about telling people how you feel and not keeping your feelings hidden, because they can't read minds, and they will leave if you don't give them a reason to stay.

05. One More Pretence

A true story, that I am sure happens to a lot of other people. You run into someone you haven’t seen for a long, long time, and you reminisce. But you are not the same people you were all those years ago, life has moved on and you’ve changed, yet you try to pretend that you haven’t. Weird.

06. Today, Tomorrows And Yesterdays

Just my take on how we view life. I’m pretty sure that there must be millions of people in this world who can only live their lives from day to day, but in a lot of affluent cultures, we worry too much about the past, and what’s going to happen in the future and never really concentrate on the moment at hand.

07. Cold Cold Heart

An observation on someone I knew, who really had a bad heart break and decided they would never let that happen to them again, so would lock their feelings away. The only trouble with that is, that it makes you a cold person.

08. All Woman To Me

I wrote this song for a long time friend of mine who needed a double mastectomy.  I wrote it originally with her in mind, but it became more about all women, worrying about the loss of their beauty with age. The real beauty is the inner person and age can’t take that away if you don’t let it.

09. Better Man

A self-observation. You go through life making decisions, and not necessarily meaning to, those decisions can affect other people’s lives. There are some decisions I have made in my life, that I would like to be able to go back and change. But obviously I can’t. The only thing to do is make sure I don’t repeat the mistakes.

10. Gone So Fast

An observation on life. It started with the well used expression of having missed so many things, because life went by so fast. It became about the people that kept disappearing from life too early for one reason or another. Too many friends, going too early.

11. Good To See You Again

Not my lyrics. The words were given to me by a very old friend and I manipulated them into this song. It’s not something I do very often, write songs to other people’s words, but these lyrics I thought were particularly good.

12. Innocent Victims

This song is my “angry” song. Human beings are particularly amazing, how they constantly repeat history over and over again, and never really learn from the mistakes of the past. We allow bad people and bad regimes to flourish all over the world, who discriminate, and cause nothing but suffering for thousands of other human beings. When is the human race going to learn to live in peace?
